Can't connect to pidgin

I just recently bought a new computer and when I downloaded pidgin I for some reason can not connect.  A message at the bottom of an empty buddy list says that my screen name is disabled and then it says "Received unexpected response from http://api.oscar.aol.com/aim/startOSCARSession: useTLS=1 is not allowed for non secure requests."  I have tried re-enabling but it doesn't seem to work.  I would appreciate your help.  Thank you!
