You need something like this in your Makefile:

PIDGIN_CFLAGS=`pkg-config --cflags pidgin purple`
PIDGIN_LIBS=`pkg-config --libs pidgin purple`
PIDGIN_PREFIX=`pkg-config --variable=prefix purple`
