Gtalk contacts which appear online on Pidgin appear offline on Gmail chat

Hi,

It happened to me a few time that I saw a Gtalk contact online in Pidgin,
but when I went to my Gmail page (in the web browser), this contact appeared
offline.

What is the explanation for this?
