Problems logging in to Google Talk

Hi! I'm running Pidgin 2.7.11 on Ubuntu 11.04 Linux (64-bit) and I'm
having intermittent problems connecting to Google Talk.  The problems
started after I changed my Gmail password.   The new password is longer
and more mangled and starts with a non alpha-numeric character.  I can
login to Gmail just fine with the new password but I have problems using
Pidgin.

It appears the ONLY way I can get Pidgin connected is if I open the main
Pidgin window, click the "Reconnect" button (after the server
disconnects), and enter the new password quickly.  If I don't open the
main Pidgin window and click the "Reconnect" button, I get prompted to
re-enter my password every few minutes and I never get connected.

Any ideas on what could be wrong?
