People not staying in chat groups

My co-workers have the same groups as I do and they are not having any issues. . . 

Protocol is XMPP

Which protocol are you using?  Who is providing the instant messaging service?  Are you sure they have not configured the server to limit groups to ones controlled by the administrator?

No it doesn't.  If you post to a public mailing list you cannot expect confidentiality.
