adding new contacts/names to Pidgin

Hello,

I have read and re-read the FAQ page and do not see how to add a new external IM contact to Pidgin.  I see how to add avatars, and blocking and how to delete protocols - but no clear way to add someone new.

When I go to "Add Buddy" is the buddy username the IM account (user's actual Gmail or other IM client) email address?

Any insight greatly appreciated.
