Aliases changing on their own?

I've noticed that some of the aliases I've set on AIM contacts have
recently changed to the contact's full name.

I'm guessing that Pidgin used name information provided by AIM and
overwrote my local alias ... does this functionality exist in Pidgin?
If so, can it be disabled?  I looked for an option but didn't see one.

I was using version 2.10.3 on Windows, but just upgraded today to 2.10.4.
