Pidgin as webclient service

Hi all,

I'm a programmer form belgium and I was wondering if
it is possible to build Pidgin straight into a website as a chat service.
If this is possible, wich steps, API and development tools would be needed.
I'm a php programmer with notion of C++. But any language is welkom to 
achieve my goal.

If Pidgin is not suited at all to build straight into websites, are 
there any alternatives?
