Scrollback not working apparently

In the past, when I opened a new conversation with someone, I would get the
tail end of the prior conversation displayed. Is this "Scrollback" and if
so, how do I enable in on a new install? I've had three separate
conversations with my wife today, but I not seen any of the previous ones in
the newer conversations.
