Pidgin has nothing to do with hotmail email.  If you were using your 
hotmail address to access MSN, there have been reports that the long 
announced shutdown of MSN finally happened a week or two ago.  In that 
case, you can either use Skype, with Microsoft's proprietary clients 
(Microsoft now own Skype), or choose a different service that is still 
reasonably friendly to open source clients.
