Missing Protocol

I don't have Jabber/XMPP as a protocol option anymore, neither in finch nor
in minbif. It wouldn't even connect if there is an account in the
accounts.xml.
I messed around a bit with minbif and xvfb before to get skype working with
it (to my surprise it seem to does that pretty well), don't know if this
may have anything to do with this. It'd surprise me, because the problem is
independent of the client (minbif as well as finch) and the user (my own
user, the user minbif, root, ...).
Any advice?
