Problems connecting just downloaded

I just downloaded Pidgin and when I added my gmail account for google talk,
I chose the protocol as google talk which then puts in the gmail domain.
Put in my username and password but when I go into the program to the buddy
list it switches the protocol to XMPP, it will not stay on google talk, so
it is unable to connect and did not download my buddy list. 

What to I do???
