oscar: Received invalid data on connection with server

I installed Pidgin on a new Windows 8.1 machine, and seem to be unable to
connect to either of my AOL screennames.  The reported error is "Received
invalid data on connection with server".  The relevant debug lines are:

(10:19:26) oscar: connected to FLAP server of type 0x0002
(10:19:26) oscar: Scheduling destruction of FLAP connection 059845E0 of
type 0x0002
(10:19:26) oscar: Destroying FLAP connection 059845E0
(10:19:26) oscar: Destroying oscar connection (059845E0) of type 0x0002.
 Disconnect reason is 5
(10:19:26) oscar: Disconnected.  Code is 0x0000 and msg is
(10:19:26) connection: Connection error on 059E1FB0 (reason: 0 description:
Received invalid data on connection with server)

Please let me know if I should add more
