The FAQ entry you've linked to is for to Finch, not Pidgin (and isn't
related to the problem you're having.

Assuming you're on Windows, you're probably experiencing a variation of the
GTK+ bug which causes http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/12899.
Unfortunately there isn't currently a fix.
