Custom smiley issue

Hi there,
I have what I think is a very basic question, but search as I might I can't
find the answer online.

What are the dimension and file size restrictions for custom smiley jpgs &
animated gifs? I'm running 2.10.3, and when I send various smileys I get a
chat error saying that an image was too large and wasn't included.
