Not a registered nickname error

Hello,

 I recently downloaded the IRC client on both my mac laptop and PC
desktop.. I was able to install with no errors.
 However, I am not able to start or join any conversation.. I see the
following error on the NickServ window -- "<username> is not a registered
nickname"
 I tried to login from my co-workers client and got the same error although
he can log in successfully.
 Does it have anything to do with the fact that my username has a dot (.)
in it ? My login is "vani.kumar"

 Any help is appreciated.
