Alternate AIM server address ignored?

I’m trying to configure Pidgin (2.10.11-1) to connect to an IM proxy server (operated by Smarsh for compliance logging) and I’ve noticed two separate problems:
1. If I do not have “Use client login” checked, it won’t connect. This may very well be a problem/limitation with the proxy server.
2. If I do have “Use client login” check, Pidgin seems to silently ignore the server address I’ve specified and connects to oscar.aol.com <http://oscar.aol.com/> just fine.
For problem 1 - these are the relevant logs from the debug output:

(07:16:28) connection: Connection error on 0x7f70ca6c9fa0 (reason: 0 description: Server closed the connection)
I think this is indicating that the server is just booting me - which is probably not related to pidgin. The only thing I can’t figure out is that this connection works fine if I use AIM for Windows (7.5.14.8). Note that I see the same problems using Pidgin for Windows.
For problem 2 - this seems like a bug. It seems as though there is something about “Use client login” that necessitates using AOL’s server, but this should be indicated to the user.
