That version of pidgin is working fine here on Mageia Linux v5/v6. Some things
to check:

1. Is there anything in the pidgin debug logs?

2. Did you try disabling the firewall?

3. Is pidgin built from source? How did you install it?

4. Did you already create the GTalk account using the web-interface and are
trying to connect to it using its password  from pidgin?

5. Is there any error?

6. What's the status of the account?
