 Agreed. The original idea was:
 for icons > 50x50 px, overlay the protocol icon
 for icons <-= 50x50px, show the protocol icon beneath the buddy icon
 for no buddy icon, show a protocol icon as a buddy icon.

 I only got around to implementing the first rule and quickly found it to
 suck.
