 configure fails if "check" is not installed, I don't think this should be
 a compulsory requirement:

 checking for CHECK... Package check was not found in the pkg-config search
 path.
 Perhaps you should add the directory containing `check.pc'
 to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
 No package 'check' found
 checking for check - version >= 0.8.2... no
 *** Could not run check test program, checking why...
 *** The test program failed to compile or link. See the file config.log
 for
 *** the exact error that occured.
 configure: error: check not found
