 Yes, you would rewind the file by the number of bytes in the closing
 tag(s). Then you'd read that many bytes and verify that it was what you
 expected. If it wasn't, you'd seek to the end of the file again. Then
 you'd write the new data.

 Now, when you're looking at files, I don't see how this is going to be any
 easier... If you're using something in the console, just do cat
 2007-04-21* | less or similar. If you're doing this in the GUI, why not
 just use the search functions in Pidgin (and submit enhancement requests
 for anything missing)?
