 Mockups. I think this is the best way of getting rid of the clutter in the
 tooltips.
 48x48 protocol icon with 22x22 status icon overlayed. Overlaying can be
 confusing but i don't think it is in this case, because the protocol and
 status icons are limited sets, in contrast to buddy icon overlays (the
 clearness of the overlay depends on the users byddy icon, which can be
 anything).
