 It didn't occur to me people would send themselves IMs as reminders, as I
 do with email.  Is this common?

 FYI, neither the official Google Talk application nor the official Google
 web-based client shows myself as an online buddy, so they must both be
 doing the check I suggested.  Since they likely went out of their way to
 add this check, I presume they judged that more people would prefer not to
 see themselves online than those who want to be able to send themselves
 IMs.

 My recommendation is to make this configurable, with the default being not
 to show one's self.
