 Thinking aloud, without reading any code:
 I had problems migrating this account due to flawed error checking on
 fwrite. It might be possible that the first time through, .gaim/logs was
 moved and symlinked to .purple/logs and that the second time through, it
 followed the .gaim/logs symlink and symlinked .purple/logs to itself.
