 I won't debate the "visual" looks.

 However, the functional aspect, I will.

 The old toolbar:
 -click BOLD and then type -> characters in bold.
 -click BOLD again -> characters now normal.
 -select text and click BOLD -> selected text is now bold...

 The new way:
 -click "FONT", then click BOLD...
 ^^^^^^^^^^ an additional step.

 And, yes, there are people that use the mouse for this, to be honest, I
 use the mouse rather then the keyboard about 60% of the times I use
 formatting.

 One really usefull suggestion for "uncluttering" the toolbar would be not
 to display the buttons whose functionality is not supported by the
 protocol via which that conversation takes place. (for example Yahoo does
 not support background color, so rather then a grayed button, or gray drop
 down menu choice, it shouldn't be there at all).
