 I am able to reproduce this consistently with the following steps:

 1) using AIM protocol, establish a Direct IM connection with another AIM
 user
 2) insert an image inline in a message to that person and send
 3) leave the chat window open but do not have any communication in either
 direction for 15-30 minutes (as long as it takes for the Direct connection
 to time-out)
 4) the Direct IM connection will time-out and a close message will be
 presented in the conversation window
 ...at this point, the socket seems to be in an invalid state and
 subsequent IM's in either direction are not transmitted and no error
 messages are presented.  Closing the IM window and opening a fresh one to
 the same person allows communication to be reestablished
