 I'm not quite sure what defines "illegal", but Pidgin has problems
 displaying the following line in AIM away messages:

 "I promise I’ll always, always be there."

 because of the '’' character. If this character is in the message, then no
 message shows up in mouseover or Get Info (only on AIM...works on ICQ and
 XMPP and only for away messages...works in available messages). If the
 character is changed to a normal quote ('), then the messages shows up
 fine. This same message shows up in the official client as well as Adium
 without issue.
