 I figured out the problem.

 It was Pidgin and ZoneAlarm not playing well with one another. I
 uninstalled ZoneAlaram and went with Comodo Firewall Pro instead. Pidgin
 is running happily with only 15 threads now.

 Hope this helps anyone else with this same issue.
