Comment (by brettalton):

Derni, I'm going to reply to you with bullets and not embedded notes on
 your comments:[[BR]]
(I apologize for taking so long to get back to you all)

  * Yes, I understand the use of aliases and agree they are a good idea
  * Thoughts on 'alias', 'friendly name', 'screen name' for MSN:
   * 'alias' - name makes sense
   * 'screen name' - 'screen name' with 'e-mail address' inside the text
 box or as a tooltip
   * 'friendly name' - 'display name' with 'type your name as you want
others to see it' inside the text box or as a tooltip
    * This is why I argued against even using 'screen name' for your e-mail
address. All MSN users know it as 'e-mail address' while their 'friendly
name' is 'display name'. See the conflict?
   * As for organizing them, put them all into one dialogue. Do the same
with the avatar. If you have one dialogue asking for names and login
information and then have another dialogue asking for 'friendly
name'/'display name' in a remote location, and then two spots for choosing
an avatar, with one that overrides the other, then this can be confusing
 to any user.
    * If you don't want it all in "one" dialogue, use tabs with headers
such as "Login Information", "User Information", etc.
   * Marking 'alias' as option is great, I agree
  * I just stated that you have NOT seen this argument before, because most
of the people that are having problems do have the tools or will to
contact you. So for you to say that because you see 'no one complaining,
therefore it's not happening' is illogical.
  * Assuming the user is smart enough to use your software is never a good
"train of thought". If all software was logical and easy to use, we
wouldn't have these discrepancies time and time again. I've always been
tought, and excuse my language, that you have to act as if your user is a
complete moron and work your way up from there.
   * You guys (Pidgin Developers) have done an EXCELLENT job of this; DO
NOT GET ME WRONG. I am not her to bash your efforts. I am hoping to
explain one slightly more user friendly way of presenting the dialogue
 box.
    * I will make compositions of my thoughts in due time
  * That "Where is MSN Messenger?" was simply a joke, stating that these
users are coming from Windows into Linux. Once I show them Pidgin, they
never look for MSN again. There is no way I will re-name your program
and/or give it any other logo, ever.
  * Your argument for having for having 'Friendly Name' separate from the
login information is a good one, so if you're going to do that, I would
again suggest that the term 'screen name' be turned into 'e-mail address'
because that is quite simply their login information.
  * The "text-field for editing 'friendly name'" idea is simply to have
your 'friendly name' at the top of the main Pidgin window as text and upon
double-clicking, turns into a text-field for easy editing
   * A composition will be provide if a visual is needed
  * I will do my best to get more information out of my users related to
 their problems with Pidgin
