Comment:

 There already is keyboard shortcut support for all of the smileys you've
 entered there and you even included the shortcuts in your post: ( :-),
 :-(, etc ).

 One great reason that pidgin really shouldn't (and consequently will not)
 be using these bindings to insert the smileys is that it will prevent them
 from being used for GTK+ bindings.  You can actually create a trivial set
 of GTK+ bindings (see the FAQ entry about how to make Ctrl+Enter send)
 that would cause the smileys to be inserted for these keystrokes.
