 Exact same symptoms, but occurs sporadically. I leave Pidgin open nearly
 24/7 on my laptop though. Problem occurred several hours into use.

 Events:
 1. The contact I was messaging didn't appear offline, but I kept getting:
   Unable to send message: Not logged in
 (Note: The Offline Message Emulation plugin's prompt did not ask me to
 store any of these messages in a pounce. Possibly related.)
 2. Changing my availability didn't affect my log-in state.
 3. I had to disable and re-enable my account.
 4. Upon logging back in, most, but not all, of my contacts disappeared,
 and blist.xml was rewritten by Pidgin with most of the contact information
 missing.

 ...

 And something unusual just occured in which my contact list was restored
 sans about a half dozen contacts. When I attempted to re-add one manually,
 it gave me an error, I told Elb about it, tried again, and it added that
 contact successfully.

 This is extremely strange, and quite annoying.
