Comment (by seanegan):

 Mike,

The rationale is that, for many people, the close button was the largest,
most dominant element on the tab, where the text is the most important
element, far more important than the Close button. We shrunk the status
icons for similar reasons; with the smaller status icon, the stock close
icon would look even more out of place.

Similarly, within the conversation window, the tab bar is not very
important; the conversation backlog is far more important. The larger
close buttons force the tabs to be taller than they need to be.

I wanted to de-emphasize the close button, while keeping it usable
regardless of GTK+ theme, screen DPI, or other factors. I chose to use
U+2715 MULTIPLICATION X instead of an icon, which should look always look
appropriate next to the tab labels, while remaining as discrete as
possible. Shrinking the status icons and changing the Close button to text
allows Pidgin to minimize the vertical space used by tabs, while
maximizing the space within the tab devoted to the text.

Please bring the issue up on the mailing list if you wish to discuss it
 further.
