Comment:

 The google.com certificate has a Common Name (hostname) of
 "talk.google.com" (see the google.com.pem.openssloutput, line 11). I
 assume, based solely on the name of the certificate file you attached,
 that it is giving you a "hostname does not match" error on connection. If
 this is the case, either the server is presenting the wrong certificate,
 or the Jabber prpl is telling the SSL system that it is trying to connect
 to something besides "talk.google.com".

 elb is correct as far as the pidgin.im certificate goes.
