 I agree with that sentiment completely, the software that is failing to do
 what you want here is your Sabayon portage tool and not pidgin. Pidgin is
 doing exactly what it is being told to do (that is build with all
 available and configured options). Whereas emerge is failing to do what
 you want which is to ensure that you get the graphical pidgin interface
 you expected. Now to be fair without having specified the gtk USE flag
 there really isn't a way for emerge to know you wanted it.

 For the record, the only reason you ran into this problem is because you
 use a source based distribution that leaves all of this up to the users
 machine. On a binary packaged distro you would have been unable to install
 the pidgin package without the correct runtime dependencies and were you
 to have gotten pidgin installed the pidgin binary would have been there.
