 I don't think it is at all dangerous unless there is a flaw in the code
 such that a malformed response could do something bad.

 I have actually wanted to disable it on my work machine due to a
 misconfigured internal router that advertises UPnP functionality, but
 really doesn't provide external port mappings.  Of course, it isn't a
 problem apart from slightly delaying certain operations.

 I don't feel strongly about this, but there are probably other people on
 networks that advertise UPnP who don't actually want to map ports
 externally for whatever reason.
