 I have some new information on this.

 The problem started to manifest itself with different buddies, but this
 time I managed to run some tests and collect some interesting information.

 The problem seems to happen if the remote party is using Live Messenger
 8.1 and more specifically when *animated* (custom?) emoticons are used. We
 tried a few messages without emoticons and with non-animated emoticons
 without problems. As soon as he used animated emoticons, the conversation
 window would open automatically. I *think* the same happens with nudges
 and other "features" of Live Messenger.

 I think I unwittingly drove datallah off the correct track a few messages
 above. As I had icons turned off, custom emoticons did not show at all
 (but even so, they do trigger the problem).

 I also ran pidgin with the --debug command-line during my diagnosis, and I
 can provide the results if it helps in any way.
