 And yes. I've rebooted (forgot to mention that initially).  :)

 Also, I just downloaded Windows Live Messenger 8.5 (Build 8.5.1302.1018)
 and using the same email/password on the same machine (Vista Ultimate x86)
 it connects and authorises perfectly well.
