 I haven't looked at the code recently, but I do think datallah hit the
 nail on the head (and a couple of you have confirmed). If I remember
 correctly, the code that handles the custom smileys is creating the
 conversation before the code that would normally intercept the creation of
 the conversation and stick it in a hidden window. Disabling custom smileys
 should work around this for now.

 We'll have to look into this, keeping in mind the possible future change
 to UI-less conversations (which exist in 2.3.0 but will be reverted in
 2.3.1).
