 Just want to report that this works :)

 I got gtkstatusicon.2.diff and applied it. A couple of hunks in the patch
 failed because the old code has been cleaned up using macros, but they
 were only whitespace changes so I ignored it... compiled Pidgin from
 within the jhbuild shell with
  --without-x --enable-gtkstatusicon --disable-gestures

 And now I have Pidgin running on my Mac, and it even has a working tray
 icon. Thank you!
