 Was Pidgin built with Spellchecking support? (What does it say for
 GtkSpell in Help-About?)
 If it is enabled, what does the debug log say?

 Are you running Pidgin in the en_US locale?  The Pidgin locale needs to
 match the locale of the dictionary you're trying to use.
