Comment:

 I've seen this happen when you had a GTK+ app running (or not closed
 correctly) when you installed Pidgin.

 Reinstalling GTK+ (you can download a standalone installer from
 [http://sf.net/projects/pidgin our sourceforge site] while no GTK+
 applications are running should resolve it.
