Comment:

 This is caused my a misconfiguration on your machine.  Pidgin doesn't deal
 with anything related to deciding which program opens files or protocol
 handlers.

 You need to re-register IE as your http:// protocol handler.  The easiest
 way to do that will be to make a different browser the default and then
 switch it back to IE.
