 i took your advice, nosnilmot, and upgraded my distro. not to a newer
 Fedora, though -- i've been very impressed with Ubuntu lately (having
 installed it on a friend's laptop and been shocked to find everything
 including the wireless card working with no tweaking at all) and so i
 installed that. i was surprised how easy it was -- just kept my /home
 partition and a few important things from /etc and all my settings remain.

 i no longer have the segfaulting issue (or at least haven't yet).
