Comment:

 Pidgin doesn't do anything at all to affect the power saving mode for the
 monitor (or anything else).

 The only thing that I can think of is if your monitor wakes up when a
 window starts flashing - I have no idea why this would be the case, it
 doesn't happen to me.  I'd look at your power saving configuration and see
 if anything looks interesting there.
