Comment:

 Well gee, I feel like an idiot.  Can't imagine ever wanting to use that,
 but it must have been set somehow.  Would someone with the ability to
 change this into a request to have the "Mute Sounds" option show up in the
 Preferences dialog too so you don't end up with more folks like me who are
 clueless about why they have no sound?  'Preciate it.
