Comment (by queueram):
I don't think that Steam friends uses an MSN-like protocol: the link you
reference is for people to submit ideas for improvement of Steam Friends
to the developers. I think their suggestions with the MSN icon indicate
are used for comparison of features supported by MSN (not really too sure
why they single out MSN).
As far as protocol implementation, I've been analyzing some packet
captures and have a pretty well decoded their protocol headers (at least
the layer that sits just above UDP). As soon as they start encrypting
information during the login sequence, I get lost however. Gary mentioned
on the mailing list that they might being using ice-key encryption. I've
been playing around with ICE [1], but have not successfully figured out
their key exchange, so I cannot confirm this at this time. I'm not even
sure that i have the correct ice.
I am going to continue to work on this in my spare time. I welcome any
offers of assistance. Is there a good or preferred way to share the
information I have figured out thus far?
