 I don't think that Steam friends uses an MSN-like protocol: the link you
 reference is for people to submit ideas for improvement of Steam Friends
 to the developers.  I think their suggestions with the MSN icon indicate
 are used for comparison of features supported by MSN (not really too sure
 why they single out MSN).

 As far as protocol implementation, I've been analyzing some packet
 captures and have a pretty well decoded their protocol headers (at least
 the layer that sits just above UDP).  As soon as they start encrypting
 information during the login sequence, I get lost however.  Gary mentioned
 on the mailing list that they might being using ice-key encryption.  I've
 been playing around with ICE [1], but have not successfully figured out
 their key exchange, so I cannot confirm this at this time.  I'm not even
 sure that i have the correct ice.

 I am going to continue to work on this in my spare time.  I welcome any
 offers of assistance.  Is there a good or preferred way to share the
 information I have figured out thus far?
