 I just upgraded to Pidgin 2.3.1, but I don't see anything included with
 pidgin like that.  I later found a third party plugin called Smart Ear, (a
 simple typo from what you wrote, but different enough that Google was
 almost useless....)  Its webpage hasn't been updated since May, and stands
 at version 2.0.0-1.  Regardless, I can use it to accomplish what I want.

 Does anyone know if this plugin is being actively worked on?  For
 inclusion with Pidgin or separately?
