 I'm actually running into this same issue as well, and it only started
 happening after I upgraded from 2.3.0 to 2.3.1.  This only happens with my
 home PC (and not my work PC).

 * It has happened both when the conversation window has focus and when it
 does not.
 * Ctrl+W is still listed as close.
 * I'm connected to AIM, ICQ and XMPP (Gmail).
 * Running Windows XP SP2

 I just completely uninstalled Pidgin, GTK and Aspell, then reinstalled to
 see if the problem goes away.  I did not clear out my settings directory
 at all.  I'll report back if I see any more issues (or try to post in 2
 weeks if I don't see anything).
