Comment:

 I saw that person online for the first time (we must have alternating
 internet usage patterns or something).  It looks like her icon is a 1
 pixel by 1 pixel transparent square block.  So I'd say that Pidgin is
 handling this correctly... she just has a weird icon.  Windows AIM has the
 same behavior.
