 Its either pidgin or, more likely, a GTK issue. As was relayed to me...

 If this can be fixed with 0 at 0.so, as xxx says, then this wont be
 reproducible on Linux.  Linus & Co., in their wisdom, map the first 1K of
 the address space as zeros, so that common SEGVs don't stop applications
 running.  And this also means ugly bugs like this one go unnoticed until
 they hit platforms that put fixing bugs ahead of "user comfort".  The 0 at 0
 hack allows us to be as broken as Linux in this regard.
